dbt Labs raised another round of funding- $222m at $4.2b valuation. Existing investor Altimeter led the round, with participation from Databricks, GV, Salesforce Ventures, and Snowflake. The raise will fuel our investment in building the next layer in the modern data stack.

Tech acquisitions are like marriages: They mean a lot to the people involved, but the rest of us would be forgiven for not noticing that much is different. After blustery announcements about synergy, shared visions, and obligatory corporate excitement for the next step in the journey, most acquisitions fade from relevance.

When I was a data scientist at Airbnb, I once received an ad-hoc request to identify Olympians that had accounts on Airbnb. No context given, just a colorless request in Slack. After a day of painstakingly scraping the web and munging data in SQL, I dumped the data into a table in our data warehouse, sent it off, then promptly moved onto other work.
